Who Are Captain America's Biggest Foreign Box-Office Allies? [UPDATE]

Before Captain America: First Avenger was released in July, much was made about how the title — and title character in his red, white and blue — would play in foreign markets. In fact, three countries (Russia, Ukraine and South Korea) even decided to release the film with the Marvel-approved shortened title The First Avenger. Following a successful showing stateside, good ol’ Cap made his worldwide debut in many big foreign markets over the weekend; as the numbers trickle in, it looks he’s got some pretty enthusiastic allies. The original post used numbers solely from Box Office Mojo; it has been updated following response from Paramount regarding the worldwide Captain America gross. Like Mexico! According to numbers reported by Box Office Mojo, Captain America dominated the Mexican box office last weekend, earning a shade over $8 million from 1,690 venues to easily defeat weekend three of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. The Joe Johnston-directed film also grossed more in its first weekend south of the border than Thor did, though — to be fair — the Norse god opened on nearly 600 less screens. It wasn’t just Mexico where Captain America hit: the film earned $6.9 million from just 527 screens in Brazil; in Australia, Cap grabbed just over $5 million with an additional $4.9 million coming from the United Kingdom. (Incidentally, in those territories, Thor claimed bigger openings, including a lofty $9.1 million from UK ticket buyers.) Captain America even did well — relatively speaking — in Serbia & Montenegro, finishing second behind Harry Potter during its opening weekend with $7,869 in ticket sales from four theaters; its per screen average was higher than Potter (which is playing there in 12 theaters), for reference. Overall, Captain America: The First Avenger has earned a reported $65,863,605 internationally thru Aug. 2 (Paramount has CA at $53.9 million thru Aug. 1), with tallies from openings in France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Greece, Egypt and Austria yet to come. As for Russia, Ukraine and South Korea: Captain America The First Avenger has yet to debut in those countries, but Movieline will update its progress there when numbers become available. UPDATE: Per Paramount, Captain America actually did premiere in Russia and South Korea, where it grossed $4.2 million and $2.5 million, respectively. Score one for the non-American title! Below, the top 10 foreign markets for Captain America: 1. Mexico: $8,102,190 2. Brazil: $6,885,569 3. Australia: $5,061,705 4. United Kingdom: $4,899,096 5. Russia: $4,200,000 (estimate from Paramount) 6. Italy: $2,827,021 7. Korea: $2,500,000 (estimate from Paramount) 8. Philippines: $2,103,025 9. Taiwan: $1,939,705 10. Singapore: $1,691,249 [Figures also via Box Office Mojo]

You Think Your Neighbors Are Bad: Listen to Two Angry Denizens Fight in the Shut Up Little Man! Trailer

What do you do when your two middle-aged alcoholic neighbors — one, a raging homophobe and the other, a flamboyant gay man — scream insults at each other all day long? If you’re Eddie Lee Sausage and Mitchell D, and encountering this problem in San Francisco in the late ’80s, you start recording. Then, thirty years later, you splice the audio together with interviews to make a Tribeca Film documentary called Shut Up Little Man! Take a look at the trailer ahead. In case you haven’t yet heard of “one of the world’s first viral pop-culture sensations,” Eddie and Mitch’s tapes quickly gained a cult following in San Francisco in the late ’80s, even inspiring comic artwork from Dan Clowes (Ghost World) and — according to the film’s official website — music from the likes of Devo. The tapes chronicled 18 months worth of verbal and physical abuse and were ultimately pieced together with the help of director Matthew Bate for this documentary, which became an official 2011 Sundance Film Festival selection. Sadly, the alcoholic odd couple roommates, Peter J. Haskett and Raymond Huffman, passed away in 1992 and 1996 so they could not enjoy their feature debut. Their violent likenesses will live on though in this “audio misadventure.” VERDICT: Surely more entertaining than your neighbor’s fights. Beginning Aug. 25, Shut Up Little Man will be available for download on iTunes, before a very limited theatrical release on Sept. 16.

DreamWorks Animation Rejects Paramount Offer to Extend Distribution Deal By One Year (Exclusive)

The relationship between DreamWorks Animation and Paramount Pictures continues to devolve. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that DWA's board has rejected an offer to extend its current distribution pact for an additional year, through 2013. Paramount, whose deal with DWA runs through 2012, had offered to continue to release DWA movies for an 8 percent fee, though the studio wants to receive more in the future and DWA wants to pay less. The standoff between DWA topper Jeffrey Katzenberg and Paramount's Brad Grey intensified when Grey announced last month that it will launch its own animation division. DWA declined to comment. DreamWorks is said to be exploring other distribution options but an insider says at this point, "nobody has been pitched to do distribution" for DWA and therefore, no one has passed. Though some outsiders do not see an obvious contender to take Paramount's place, this source says the animation firm "is not quaking in its boots going, `Paramount is the only game in town'" because DWA can deliver solid fees on product that reliably grosses in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Even the latest DWA film, Kung Fu Panda 2, perceived as a relatively disappointing performer, has grossed more than $600 million worldwide. The DWA insider dismisses Paramount's decision to launch an animation division as a plan "to do low-rent movies." Email: Kim.Masters@thr.com Twitter: @KimMasters Related Topics
